Monitor keywords on Slack communities
Once you enter a Slack community, you’ll see a flood of messages coming in. And the more communities you join, the larger the amount of messages you receive. That’s why it’s key to cut through the noise and focus on the relevant messages. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to do that using keyword monitors.
Firstly, let’s understand how the keyword monitors work in Pypeline.io. When adding a new keyword monitor, you can choose between monitoring for one or multiple keywords.
To monitor one keyword, simply add it, select the communities you want to monitor and create the monitor. We usually recommend using a single keyword, if you’re monitoring your brand keywords or other non-dictionary keywords.
In order to monitor multiple keywords per single message, add them to the keyword box and concatenate them using the AND and NOT connectors:
- AND : gives you messages that contain all keywords put together with AND
- NOT : gives you messages that do not contain the keyword followed by NOT
By the way: A logical OR is not supported explicitly but can be achieved implicitly by duplicating your keyword and exchanging the bits you want to distinguish.
If you want to monitor a generic keyword that would yield too many results, adding another relevant keyword and using one of the operators above can be helpful to sharpen your search. I know all of this is still abstract, so let’s look at a couple of examples that work well for our partners.
Brand keywords
Monitoring your brand keyword or domain (just enter brandname.com without the https and www) will help you find whatever people say about you.

Competition keywords
Using your competitor’s names or domains lets you find any conversation where they are mentioned. This can be particularly interesting if you’re looking for displacement opportunities. Should there be too many messages coming in through this monitor, you can add a second or third keyword in your query to sharpen your filter.
zoominfo
zoominfo AND alternative
zoominfo AND competitor
Topic keywords
What are the topics that your target audience talks about before purchasing a solution like yours? Go into the communities, find the topics and keywords they discuss and enter those into the keyword monitor. For example, for Pypeline.io we add the following:
monitor AND communities
community AND sales NOT management
intent data
Just like in the example above, it's important to find a balance between keywords that are too general and keywords that are too specific. If you make it too specific, you will miss relevant messages, if you make it too general, you will be flooded with messages.
Adding multiple keywords
You can add multiple keywords to the same set of communities at once, instead of adding every keyword individually. Select the relevant communities, separate your keywords with a comma and click “Create”. They will show up as separate keywords in the Dashboard, but this speeds up the process of adding keywords significantly.
